My goal this month was to find a fun place we could dine “outside.” That’s a tall order at the moment, as there are no longer many options and the temps have been pretty brutal. I wanted to find somewhere nice my dad, sister and I could enjoy a nice meal on the day that my mom died.
I was so glad that I remembered Fig & Lily, a restaurant I’d been wanting to try in Morristown that has igloo dining. On the weekend, the igloos require you do a $68 prix fixe menu. The same is not required if you go for lunch during the week.
The set-up
The garden area is off to the side of the restaurant in the common space for several neighboring buildings. They have a large Christmas tree set up out there right now as well.
Each of the igloos are super cute! There are purple plastic flowers running along the igloo’s ceiling. Each igloo has its own space heater (small, but very powerful!) and each person gets their own fleece blanket in case the heater isn’t enough.
The menu
There are so many great options on the menu! I love that with Mediterranean fare. So many different dips and such to tempt you on the appetizer menu. We ended up going with the cheese phyllo rolls, which were filled with Mediterranean cheeses, parsley and herbs and served with marinara sauce. These were so good I was tempted to ask for a second order!
I couldn’t decide on a main so thankfully my sister wanted to split a couple of the entrees. The first was the chicken shish — marinated chargrilled chicken breast which was served with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. I always love kebabs and these were extra well done. I can’t place what was in the potatoes but they were a different take on mashed potatoes and worked perfectly with the kebab.
We were also curious about the garden cut roll. I don’t know that I would have chosen it if I was just getting one dish, but our server’s face lit up when we ordered it. “That is one of our most popular dishes!” It made me happy we were giving it a try.
The roll was made of ground beef and lamb, marinated with eastern Mediterranean seasoning and grilled over charcoal. It was then rolled with kashkaval cheese and lavash bread, and topped with yogurt and marinara sauce. This was so good! For a beef and lamb dish, it was super light and the flavors were so good.
For dessert, it was hard to resist the promise of a warm chocolate dessert. The chocolate garden soufflé is made with Belgian chocolate, Cointreau liquor and homemade vanilla custard sauce. It requires 15 minutes for them to prep and is worth every minute!
We also got the Turkish Kunefe. I had never tried this before but it was such a unique dessert, perfect if you want something that’s not super sweet. It is shredded phyllo dough with sweet cheese that has been soaked in syrup topped with pistachio and Maras ice cream. It also requires a 15 minute wait but totally worth it as well.
We had such a great meal. Will definitely be back again soon for round 2 of Fig & Lilly igloo dining!
