Before starting these, I took a look back at the year before’s list. Blank. Totally blank. I always set some sort of resolutions or intentions for the year. Well, until 2021. Sounds about right though.
I’ve taken some time in setting these. Everything is still so crazy that the last thing I want to do is add some unnecessary pressure for resolutions. And I was definitely on team “tip toe into 2022,” since I’m not sold on a new year being any sort of magical change for us. But I do like the idea that it’s a good time to check in with yourself and what you need to motivate you. That being said, here’s what I’m thinking for 2022…
Be present more.
I’m guilty of often feeling tapped out at the end of the day and wanting to disconnect just as I need to focus on connecting with my kids. I’m planning to do as much as I can to be there with them, to plan fun activities for us all to enjoy and continue to make the best of all the various situations we’ve been dealt.
Dust off the flute and relearn to play Doppler’s Hungarian Pastorale Fantasy.
What’s the saying – go big or go home? If so, that’s my approach to returning to playing my flute. Fun facts: I actually considered majoring in music (auditioned at least at three colleges I can recall) and had a music scholarship to the college I did go to. Probably more. This was my favorite piece of music I ever played. I competed by memory playing it for two concerto competitions and won. I’m determined to figure out how to fumble my way though it. More to come. (If I can figure out how to grab the video file, I’ll have to share a look back and some looks at my progress along the way!)

The bar here is admittedly low. I had a Goodreads challenge goal for last year of 12 and I miserably failed. This year, I’m committing to 8, something I know I can hit and hope to exceed. And I’ll be sharing here too so you can follow along. (Current read: Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner.)
Write more.
I’ve been on pause lately on long-form writing, mainly because I had an idea for a book I ended up needing to shelf for a pretty personal reason. This year, I’m committing to either dusting it off or picking a new idea to write on. 365 days should be enough time for inspiration to strike — right? I’m also intentionally keeping this broad because I want to do more writing of all kinds.
Balanced fitness.
Last year I focused so much on running that I think it negatively impacted my overall strength. I never took time for strength classes fo build up my core or leg strength, both of which are important in running. And I’m doing other things, like my aerial classes I’ve been doing some of lately.
I’m already off to a good start. I’ve been doing some yoga, some strength for runners, some barre and some core. Here’s to continuing the trend throughout the year ahead.
Another half marathon.
I loved doing two this year, but I’m setting a goal of one for the year. Hoping that the pandemic and my still not 100% knees are on board with this plan.
What’s on your list for the year?
