I haven’t hardly been anywhere since COVID-19. We took our quick trip to Hersheypark last year, I drove 45 minutes away to a winery for the Federal Twist 10K and we went with some of the cousins to the Philly Zoo … but that’s been it.
To be honest, when the tickets for the North American leg of Tori Amos’ tour went on sale with very little notice I almost didn’t buy them. And then when I ultimately did, it was assuming that it would either end up postponed or I would choose to sell them. But when May rolled around, I decided to mask up and give it a shot — since you never know when a tour could be the last.
I’ve also written about some of the emotional connections I have regarding Tori shows and missed moments with my mom — and finally forgiving myself for them. It seemed like I was being told with the Sunday show falling on Mother’s Day that was my sign I was supposed to go.
Traveling Down
I got up pretty early that Sunday morning – but that could easily have been most Sunday mornings. I enjoyed a nice Mother’s Day breakfast and lots of hugs with our little ones and opened up some things they had made for me at school, like this super cute Happy Mother’s Day bag, before hitting the road.
The bag came in handy as I put a ton of my Tori Amos CDs in and listened to them for the drive down. I can’t remember the last time I listened to CDs, but it felt like a fun and very appropriate blast from the past, one that really helped the time pass much more quickly somehow. After a stop over at my friend Alison’s, we made our way onto the venue — the theater at MGM Casino National Harbor.
Pre-Show Dinner and Casino Fun
We got there early and were able to enjoy a fabulous meal at Osteria Costa. The restaurant had just reopened a few days prior from their closure during the pandemic. They were still ramping back up but I can attest that both their lasagna and blueberry hibiscus margarita are outstanding.
After dinner, we took a very short-lived trip into the casino — where most of us committed no more than $20 to the penny slots. I earned back some, and walled away with only $10 lost. I’ll take it (and I’m also good on casinos for the foreseeable future.)
The Concert
It was so nice to have the concert right there at the same venue! It wasn’t my favorite venue, but was far better of an option than DAR Constitution Hall is. It was an amazing show though and I had a great view — so no complaints. Show favorites included Spring Haze, Sweet Sangria, Past the Mission and A Sorta Fairytale. Full setlist, below.
