I’m definitely not ready to turn the page on summer. I know it technically runs through something like September 22, but it seems like everyone is full steam ahead into fall. Iced pumpkin cold brew in one hand, and a beach towel in the other? Now that I can get behind. Here’s a bit of what’s been going on throughout the month in my world.
Favorite splurge: Summersalt
I’ve been wanting to buy a Summersalt suit since they hit the market and this month, I finally caved and got it. 100% no regrets. This was only a quasi-splurge because they were on sale. I got both the Sidestroke suit and their ruched swim skirt that matches it and can’t wait to wear them both.
Podcast streaming: The Teacher’s Trial
I first listened to The Teacher’s Pet, the first podcast series Hedley Thomas did on the subject, when I was at home over maternity leave. My sister recommended it and I couldn’t stop listening to it. The story was so wild to me — that anyone would ever believe a devoted mother of two young children would voluntarily leave them, never to be heard from again. Even more, that a woman so close to her mother, brother and sister would never contact them again.
There was recently a new podcast called The Teacher’s Trial, focused on her husband at the time, Christopher Dawson, finally being brought to trial 40 years later after her disappearance — and finally convicted of her murder. If you haven’t listened yet, it’s a good one to check out. Shows the power podcasts can truly have when done right, with new episodes still coming as the team dives into the verdict.
Latest read: Malibu Rising
I’ve been working on this one for months. IThis is no reflection on the quality of the book and all about my inability to sit down and focus on reading. Turns out I just needed a book club meeting to get me to buckle down and make my way through it. It was an interesting story of a family – unfolding through flashbacks showing their often painful story of growing up with a famous absent father and the mother who tried to keep them all together.
The family was an interesting cast of characters. It builds to a big annual party of theirs, which wasn’t as interesting to me. Even though the true ending felt a bit underwhelming (as a writer, I acknowledge endings are hard!), I thought this was a great read overall.
Peloton faves
It’s been a very light on cycling month when it comes to Peloton since my half marathon training has really started to heat up. That’s why the below list is heavier on running than cycling:
- Jess Sims – 6/5/22 – 60 minute hip hop run
- Jess Sims – 8/19/22 – 10 minute Alanis Morisette warm up run
- Matty Maggiacomo – 6/6/22 – 15 minute 2010s run
- Tunde Oyeneyin – 8/19/22 – 10 minute AFO arms: Florence + the Machine
- Robin Arzón – 8/12/22 – 30 minute live DJ ride
