How are we almost to September? The summer has totally flown by. I haven’t put my toes in the sand once and we haven’t introduced Baby Girl to the beach yet either. Both things I intend to rectify even if the sun’s heat has faded by the time we get there. I’m starting a new monthly series to share out some of my favorite things and finds from the month, so let’s get down to it before August is g-o-n-e.
#AmReading
My current read is “Life Will Be the Death of Me” by Chelsea Handler (shoutout to Theodora who passed her copy on to me). I’ve had an on again / off again relationship with Chelsea Handler. I saw her during her “Bang Bang” tour. Sometimes she amuses me and then I have periods where her humor doesn’t land with me at all.
Well, this is an entirely different thing altogether. This memoir details her experience starting therapy — as she finally allows herself to realize that her actions over the majority of her life go back to the death of her oldest brother. It’s honest, it’s emotional and, in true Chelsea form, it’s entirely inappropriate at times. Such a good read that’s worth your time – as is the podcast she’s started connected to it. Below is one quote from it that speaks to me every time.
I define me. No event or person does this. I define me. I decide who I am, and I decide how I am going to behave and I choose to do better. To look more carefully, to trudge deeper, to think about other people’s pasts and not judge someone for doing or handling something differently than I would. To understand my limitations and my shortcomings — that is my growth edge. I decide to be better. We all can be better.
Fave Kicks
This month, I’ve been rocking my Rothy’s inverse points. A cult fave that’s been out of production for a while, the style was granted a second limited run thanks to the brand’s “Vote it Back” program. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure about the color combo but I’ve found they work with so many things — and, most importantly, are maneuvering that summer to fall transition with ease and style. Splurge of the Month
I’ve been both eyeing and resisting scrunchies since they returned to being in style. I loved them so much back in the day, but the look was a bit different then combined with my permed hair. This month, I decided I didn’t care – with my long hair and a baby that thinks said hair is dinner, they are a useful accessory. I love me a good shimmery brown so when Kaitlyn Bristowe of The Bachelorette (you shouldn’t be surprised, haha — since I do co-host a Bachelor podcast) released the fall set from her scrunchie line Dew Edit, I quickly snatched one up. Yes, it was $32. Yes, that’s way too much for a scrunchie. But you know what? I love it.
On Repeat
I’m so late to the Lizzo train but I’m so on it now. Can’t get enough of her latest CD, Cuz I Love You, even though listening to it can be challenging seeing as it’s not exactly toddler friendly. If you’re a fan like me and a Peloton rider, catch Robyn Arzon’s Lizzo ride. It’s amazing.
Link Love
I’m currently loving the Sad Lunch Break site that I discovered thanks to the Creative Mornings newsletter. I spend most of my lunches at my desk as well and am totally putting this list of little things to break up the day to use, starting with this NPR Tiny Desk show with Lizzo. Do not miss the third song where she plays the flute! Extra high five from a fellow flutist.
Cheers to the long weekend ahead. We’re almost there!
