cya, 2020

December 31, 2020 by Lara

Writing a year recap for 2020 is … something. Like has been the case for everyone else on the planet, this year has been challenging. I love going back and reading through because it reminds me of some of the good moments and things I accomplished — because who doesn’t need a moment to feel good about things that actually did happen this year?

We started off the year celebrating L’s big first birthday! She wasn’t quite sure what she thought of cake, but had a great time seeing everyone and wearing her new fun dress. The upside of all the craziness of early quarantine was getting to spend so much time with our kids. L decided to walk very much on her own timeline, so we were there to see it all. Q also learned how to ride his Batman bike with training wheels and even to join mommy for Peloton classes. He wakes up most days ready to ride!

This year I really buckled down and made Peloton part of my daily routine. It’s been such a stress reliever — keeping me energized and motivated throughout this year that’s been so isolating (yes, even to those of us with families!). I shared a roundup of what I learned from 21+ weeks straight on the Peloton. Before the shutdown, I took my 150th class in person at the Short Hills Peloton store. I went on to tackle so many other milestones along the year – including most recently ride #400!

And, of course, there was some quality time in the kitchen. One of my favorite things I picked up and have continued to make is focaccia. This focaccia recipe is amazing — so easy (and very forgiving!). I finally tried making my mom’s cheese danish and they were so amazing. I’m making them again tonight!

I’ve purposely saved the biggie for last. A big part of the year was breaking my foot. It really halted my routine and sidelined me a few weeks from a half marathon I’d been training for. Before then, I did manage to finish 48 miles for the CompuServe Run the Northeast Corridor Challenge. I literally finished 5K miles for the RNR Virtual 5K just before my foot broke. I still managed to participate in the Womxn Run the Vote Relay. After 14+ weeks in a walking boot, I finally got downgraded to a brace and have been walking at PT. I’m back on the bike and getting stronger every day. My big lesson of the year was that breaking my foot didn’t have to break me. And in an unexpected way, I accomplished my 2020 resolution to slow down more — because life is funny like that.

After 3 months in a boot with a broken foot, it’s time to DANCE. #MerryChristmas to me! 🙌 #footloosechallenge #footlooselinedance #postinjury

It looks like it’ll be another year of challenges — at least for the foreseeable future, but we are sticking with it. Masking up and staying smart.

Here’s to a fresh new year of new adventures. Happy New Year!
