an ice cream tour of denver

October 27, 2018 by Lara Leave a Comment

Back in August, we took our first family vacation as a family of three. We haven’t been traveling too much these days. With Q’s second birthday approaching at the time, we also wanted to travel at least once where he’d be free! One of my close friends lives in Denver so we thought it was a great time to pay her a visit and to finally meet her little girl (who Q loved). It was quite warm while we were there, so we ended up tackling the city one scoop of ice cream at a time. This kicks off the first in a series of posts on the great things we tried while we were in town. Here’s more on some of our Denver ice cream faves.

Little Man Ice Cream is this is the spot to hit up if you want to be in the midst of the downtown Denver scene. Ice cream is solid yet doesn’t venture too far into the realm of crazy flavors. It’s a super cute set-up, mostly outdoors. The night we were there, they were showing Grease outdoors for free in the back, complete with popcorn.

Sweet Cow was our all-around winner. This was really close to the area where we were staying. I liked that they had some fun flavors, but that I knew exactly what to expect from what I ordered. I had both their oatmeal cookie and Nutter Butter shakes and drank every last sip. Definitely splurge and get their homemade whipped cream. It’s the best I’ve had anywhere.

Bonnie Brae is the classic, having been a staple in Denver for 30+ years! It’s tucked up against a neighborhood – one you’ll get to likely experience as there’s nowhere else pretty much to park. There’s fun outdoor seating and there was a live musician performing while we were there. They also have the option of a waffle cup, which is my new favorite ice cream container. Genius.

Sweet Action is the new trendy addition to the ice cream scene. I squeezed in a visit here on our last day, curious to see what unique flavors they had to try. I had to try the goat cheese black pepper, which was unique yet surprisingly quite good. The goat cheese was creamy and only a slight nod to the cheese. I didn’t order it, but I totally would next time. Other fun options that day included whiskey brickle, pineapple upside down cake (also good) and vegan coffee + donuts. I ended up ordering a scoop of elderflower and a scoop of snickerdoodle, both delicious.
