Well, it’s almost here. We are close to a week out from the frenzied madness otherwise known as Black Friday. If you’re like me, the stack of presents purchased is nonexistent and the list of those to buy is long. But that’s okay because it’s still early and those deep discounts are right around the corner!
Next Friday kicks off the shopping season with a bang. I’ll admit I don’t always go in person for Black Friday sales. Over the years, I do have some fond memories of going out early with my mom. Like me, she always appreciated finding a good bargain. Now though, Black Friday is much broader than a day — with many stores kicking off their discounts as early as this upcoming weekend. Here are some ideas to help you purposefully approach the day so you too can find some this year and, hopefully, with a touch of sanity.
Make that list. No, lists aren’t just for Santa! Black Friday can be chaotic, so a game plan is key. Map out who you need to buy for and any high level ideas you have for them. It will be helpful in choosing what you ultimately buy so you maintain your focus. It’ll also give you something to update day of if any unexpected finds catch your eye. When I have gone in person, this makes it easy to make impulse buys align with something on your list! I prefer to focus on department stores like Macy’s which will have a wide variety of things from kitchen steals to clothing deals for so many people from your family.
Do your homework. Some big retailers like Macy’s and Target have shared online what their Black Friday deals will be. The Slickdeals site in particular makes it easy to scroll through all of Macy’s Black Friday sales. They are even offering 13 free after rebate deals (I’m eyeing that frying pan!) if you’re willing to head to the store. (FYI these free after rebate deals are launching at 5pm on Thanksgiving Day.)
Take special note of which are available online versus which ones require you to come in person. Some of the big door busters require you visit in person. Also, check the timing for their specials. Some stores may have them go live on the evening Thanksgiving or, as is becoming more of the trend, even several days before!
Opt-in. Personally, I’ve been on a big unsubscribe kick since lately email has become overwhelming. Resist this and reverse your approach — if only temporarily! I do recommend opting back in or subscribing in advance to mailing lists for stores or brands you’re planning to purchase from on Black Friday. There may be added discounts included in any messages they send out leading up to Black Friday. I’ve already been receiving lots of emails with details like these from companies so now’a the time.
Build out your profile. If you’re electing to take advantage from Black Friday deals from home, make sure you have a complete account built out on the store’s website including your full billing and payment details. This help to ensure you’re ready for a quick checkout and could give you the leg-up as stock starts to disappear.
Make an event of it. If you’re going in person, make a morning of your time out. See if friends want to join you and follow the shopping with breakfast at the diner or even brunch at your favorite restaurant. I’m never one to pass up an excuse for a tasty meal. That coffee will help you forget that early AM wake-up call.
Happy shopping!
