The snow came and it feels like it’s just kept coming since. In our household, it’s less about Valentine’s Day and more about a few days later — which is the anniversary of our first date. February 17th we met up at Six Degrees in the East Village for a maybe date and, well, here we are!
We booked our deliveries for around the 19th to bring us a little of NYC for the occasion. If you haven’t tried it yet, Goldbelly is a fabulous way to try a new restaurant that’s located in a different city or, in our case, that you’re temporarily unable to access. (Click here to get $15 off your first Goldbelly order.) T ordered us a fancy sushi spread from Blue Ribbon Sushi. I ordered us some desserts from La Newyorkina, a spot I will always fondly remember for their cart on the High Line I’d frequent on the summertime walks home from flying trapeze.
So I was honestly a bit meh on the idea of getting sushi. Ever since having the kids, my appetite for sushi has been pretty nonexistent. T wants to get it often and I’m always shaking my head no. I think we’ve gotten it a couple of times and we’ve always been underwhelmed. I’m definitely glad I let him convince me on this!
He ordered their DIY Kit for 2. We received a package with the different fish (we had salmon, tuna and white fish) for the rolls, a package of sushi rice, sheets of seaweed and the bamboo sheet to do the rolling to make the homemade rolls. They also sent us all the various things you need to do sushi right (in my opinion): soy sauce, spicy mayo, ginger and some wasabi.
I learned I’m not the master sushi roller in the house. Thankfully T was much better at it than I was! I sort of did one roll, but he jumped in to do all the rest. We finally put some of our nice sharp wedding knives to good use (as I definitely recommend a very nice sharp knife to do this right!). I was impressed though how great it turned out and of course the taste was amazing, far exceeding the other time I tried making sushi at home with some friends and any time we’ve tried to order sushi since moving to New Jersey. My lesson is perhaps I just don’t like so-so sushi? Because Blue Ribbon Sushi is amazing.
I was so excited for these churros. I had been eyeing them ever since Alejandra Ramos included them in her segment on the TODAY Show. They were on the thinner side for churros and were just the right consistency. Sometimes churros can be too oily or too thick. Not these! They let me choose between chocolate and dulce de leche. I went with the latter but SURPRISE! They sent us both.
While it does look like these heart-shaped ones were a Valentine’s only deal, they do have their standard churros as well as their amazing paletas available all year long!
How have you been getting creative with celebrations over the last year?
