Running a half marathon in the middle of marathon training is one of those things runners talk about doing but rarely manage to pull off. This cycle, I finally did it. Casey and I headed south to Monmouth County Park for the E. Murray Todd Half Marathon — a low‑key, open course that’s easy to get in and out of, which is exactly what you want during peak training.

The morning started dark and foggy, but by the time we lined up, the air was warm with just a light mist. Honestly, prettyp ideal for March. I went in with zero expectations after barely running the week before. My only goal was not to push too hard. Somehow that turned into a huge half marathon PR for this slower runner. I’m still a little stunned.

More importantly, the race gave me some key insights heading into the London Marathon:
- You heat up quickly. I regretted not wearing my Sarah Marie Running Co. race crop because I was hot by mile three. (But I mean as always, choosing race day attire is such a challenge! These were my contenders.)
- Hydration matters days in advance. I didn’t drink nearly enough leading up to the race, and I felt it.
- Turn off your phone notifications. Truly. They will drive you absolutely batty mid‑race.
- My playlist needs a refresh. That’s this week’s project.
The day also delivered a small, funny moment that felt like a sign. When I stepped out of the car pre‑race, I noticed a broken clothespin on the ground. I left it there, amused. When we returned, someone had placed it neatly on my door handle, as if I’d forgotten it. Naturally, this “Beast Mode” My Little Pony mashup came home with me.

After the race, we stopped at Tatum’s Table in Lincroft for coffee and their croffle flight — a homemade croissant‑waffle tasting with crème brûlée, tiramisu, cannoli, fresh berries, and whipped cream. It’s perfect for sharing… or, if you’re post‑race like me, enjoying over two days.

The Whipped Lucky Charms Latte was exactly the sugar‑magic I needed to get through the rest of Sunday.

A half marathon PR in the middle of marathon training wasn’t on my bingo card, but I’ll take it. London is getting closer, and this race reminded me that even on imperfect weeks, good things can happen. So back to fundraising and training, because only 47 days to go!
