I would say I can’t believe June is almost gone but a 97 degree day has totally underscored that we are clearly into summertime. This Bama native though far prefers warm to cool temps, so I’ll take it.
Recent Read: One to Watch
I can’t seem to get away from Bachelor Nation, can I? During the off-season, I couldn’t resist reading One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London. The show is trying to make some efforts to diversify all the people on it – both in front of and behind the camera. But there’s been one thing they’ve yet to address – body size.
The cast has always been very thin so this book centers on a different take, with a plus sized fashion blogger being the lead of a show called Main Squeeze. She agrees to go on the show on the heels of a painful breakup and what ensues is an imaginative take on a very familiar show, down to producer manipulation, surprise suitors and lots there (as always) for the wrong reasons.
This was a fun read. I blew through it super quickly. My only complaint is that the ending itself felt too rushed. I found myself counting down the pages left confused how there could possibly be room for a resolution — but there was. I needed just a few more pages to bask in the resolution, but otherwise a wonderful, fun read!
Favorite Recent Peloton Rides: Cody / CDE
I mean, there’s almost always going to be a Cody ride in my list. I’ve been doing the Power Zone Pack Challenges but when I get to choose a non-PZ class, it’s almost always a Cody one. A recent fave is Cody’s May 11th 30 Minute Pop Ride. He talks about how you should aim to be that plate of steaming fajitas at TGIFriday’s – getting everyone’s attention with how hard you’re going into this ride. It’s a great class with some excellent Codyisms. Just because Cody starts every day with a salad doesn’t mean he can’t get down with some indulgent food. Gotta say it’s refreshing to hear, and this ride was especially uplifting!
Another recent fave is Christine D’Ercole’s Mother’s Day ride (a 30 Minute Low Impact Ride from May 5.). I know. I spent May halting email newsletters from every company that would allow me to do so. So a Mother’s Day ride wasn’t high on my list … but then I saw CDE’s IG Live talking about it — and how she was making it a ride for everyone. For those grieving the loss of their mother. For those with complex relationships with theirs. It was emotional. It was inspiring. It was just what I needed. Highly recommend it.
Recent Movie: All I Know So Far
I love Pink. Love her. I’ve seen her live three times and she’s at the top of my must see ASAP list when tours become more commonplace. I’ve loved watching her journey – through her marriage and now as a parent. Just like it does for just about any parent, it’s changed just about everything about her in some way – even though she remains authentically herself at the core. I remember first noticing it as she censored her own songs on tour! Her new documentary, All I Know So Far, is so amazing. It really captures how much she gives to her fans and to her kids. There’s also something somewhat satisfying about seeing that toddlers are toddlers, even to famous parents! The documentary includes her acceptance speech at the 2017 VMAs when she received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. This is one of my all-time favorite acceptance speeches, so had to embed it here. I could watch this every day. So empowering.
