Sullivan Street Bakery is another one on my list of places I’ve meant to try for forever but never seem to manage to visit. Until now! This week, T and I were over in Hell’s Kitchen and found ourselves right by it so it made sense to hit up for breakfast.
It’s tucked pretty far west, located around midway between 10th and 11th Avenue. We walked in and the smell of amazing carbs hit us instantly. Even if you haven’t been to their store, you may have had their bread elsewhere in the city as they supply bread to a large number of restaurants throughout Manhattan.
It was a tough decision, with so many great looking options. We were there so early so I couldn’t quite bring myself to try some of their selections that were a bit more savory.
After reading a bit more about their founder, Jim Lahey, I almost want to go back specifically for the savory — including both their tartines and the sandwiches (the latter of which they only serve beginning at 10:30am). He studied in Italy as an art student and started Sullivan Street to make for himself the fabulous breads of Italy he grew to love but yet couldn’t find in NYC.
They had a number of sweet options that caught my eye. I ended up getting one of the vanilla bombolini, which was a filled Italian doughnut. It was so good – fresh, light and fluffy. It wasn’t overly sweet either.
I also tried their Dolce Canotto, a brioche pastry with blueberries, marscapone and coconut crumble. The blueberries were moist and flavorful. The addition of the maracapone made for a creaminess to the center. The coconut crumble had just a touch of salt to it, which made it a well balanced option.
Definitely add this spot to your “must visit” list!
