There’s a new obsession in our house covered off on in one little word – Pokémon. Before I only knew it as an app T loved to use when we were still in the city to encourage him to be active and walk around more. Oh and to help me figure out where we were on a family hike once when I took the kids without him and got totally turned around.
But this is different. Q started kindergarten and started to come home talking about it and wanting all things Pokémon — cards, games, you name it. So when I saw it as a birthday party idea, it was a no-brainer. But what to go with it?
Food
Cake is one of the top priorities but was one pf the last things we lined up due to a variety of reasons this year. But, as always, one of our favorite local bakeries, Natale’s, delivered! All I did was request a Pokémon yellow and red cake and used these cupcake toppers from Amazon to decorate.
T had me order pizzas with double pepperoni on one side and just cheese on the other with the intention of using some sliced olives to turn them into poké balls as well. We ended up skipping the olives.
Favors
I appreciated as a child what an ordeal favors really are. They are expensive and so many of them are downright underwhelming. For a Pokémon birthday party, some card felt like a must — but what else?
In the end, we managed to track down a decent mix for the party – completed by T’s dedication to hunting down some of it IRL.
- Pokémon early readers (Target)
- Pokémon Nabisco snacks (Wal-Mart)
- Pokémon Halloween card packs
- Pokémon general card packs
- Pokémon temporary tattoos (Amazon)
- Pokémon stickers (Amazon)
- Red chocolate balls (white out and Sharpie used to turn them into poké balls)
Backyard activity
This ended up being the perfect way to start the party. We hired the team from Goin’ on an Adventure to lead the kids on a scavenger hunt of sorts. All we did was give them a theme and they did all the rest!
I was so taken with watching them that I forgot to even grab some great photos! They set up multiple games all over the backyard and the kids collected coins they could trade in for prizes. It was fascinating to watch! It helped to get them all interacting with each other and super engaged.
They arrived 45 minutes beforehand to set up and the activity took them an hour or so to complete. Highly recommend if you are in the Central New Jersey area.
Overall, it was a wonderful Pokémon birthday party! Q had a blast and think he’s mainly bummed he has to wait another 12 months to get to do it all over again. And, as always for us, it’s hard to believe how quickly it all flies by. This really does feel like it was yesterday in so many ways.
