It was a bit rainy one of the days of our trip, so it was time to get a bit creative to come up with some fun options that wouldn’t be entirely ruined if the rain lingered the entire day.
Breakfast at the Lancaster Beignet Company
I couldn’t resist working a visit to Lancaster Beignet Company into our schedule for the week. I loooooove beignets. With the exception for Cafe du Monde, I haven’t come across anywhere else that has been so focused on them!
We got two orders — one of their classic ones and one of their special seasonal offering, blueberry! Both were great. The traditional ones were a lighter, fluffy consistency and the blueberry one was a thicker weight and were more chewy.

Riding the Strasburg Railroad
We decided to make it a railroad day in Strasberg, starting with the Strasburg Railroad. We took the train out and back — which runs on tbe hour and lasts 45 minutes. The ride takes you thorough 2,500 acres of the countryside on America’s oldest continuously operating railroad!
We did one of the standard rides and went with their open air car. Even though it was a bit rainy, we couldn’t feel much and it provided a nice breeze on a warm summer day. The train typically runs on tbe hour and lasts 45 minutes. The ride takes you thorough 2,500 acres of the countryside on America’s oldest continuously operating railroad.
You can do other more expensive options that are indoors with A/C. They also offer several theatrical options — such as a Bonnie & Clyde show in the evening and an upcoming show for Thomas the Tank Engine!

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania
After riding the train, make your way across the street to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The museum features a collection of more than 100 historically significant locomotives and railroad cars. The exhibits are housed in a 100,000 square foot exhibit hall will additional equipment in the neighboring train yard outside.

Lunch and Games at Decades
Decades is a fascinating Lancaster spot. It’s part restaurant, part bowling alley and part arcade all housed in the historical Stahr Armory — a 90 year old 15,000 square foot former gymnasium! It’s 21+ in the evening but during the day kids are welcome.
This summer, there are discounts on tokens for the games Friday through Sunday this summer. The arcade has more than 30 retro arcade games. Next time, I want for us to check out their bowling alley!
