I’ve been curious about Storm King Art Center for ages so when we switched to a staycation, we decided it was a perfect time for a visit. We stopped for brunch on the way at Willow & Whisk in Wyckoff (so delicious — highly recommend.) That proved to be a wise choice as we then walked around a lot in the sun without easy access to food or drink. Note though you can bring your own picnic supplies to enjoy!
We learned you can rent bikes (unless for special accessibility-related needs, you’re unable to use your own) to explore the grounds but we continued our visit on foot. Storm King spans a massive 500 acres. We definitely did not manage to make it through the entire space, as it would have taken more time than we had.
I’ve never visited anywhere like this. The scale of the work was so massive. Some had elements that move. Most have some element to them where the land and overall space around the pieces are part of the artist’s intended experience. Some of the pieces were even interactive — see me crawling out of what I can closest relate to being a giant coconut!
There was another piece which had a giant swing on one of the sides, so T and I were able to hop on together and swing a bit. So fun that so many of the pieces allow for interaction!
There was also another piece which was a bridge you could walk on with seats (thrones of sorts) at either side.
They do have some accessibility options to help guests maneuver the massive space. There is a free wheelchair-accessible tram they run. Visitors can hop on and off at any of the scheduled stops around the grounds. Worth looking into if that is of interest. There is also one of the two parking lots that better positions you to be closer to the central area of the exhibit. Recommend reaching out to their accessibility email for a quick rundown of tips beforehand.
Such a fun visit and we are already discussing when we can head back to take the kids!
