On a bit of a whim, I decided to take the kids to see the Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie — their first movie ever. I’m all about trying to instill in them our love of music so it felt like the right fit. I was a little worried about the length, but I took the pressure off by resigning myself to being okay with the money spent — even if we only managed to make it 15 minutes.
I made the most of it though. I bought them both friendship bracelets they managed to lose the same day. I got them fun heart-shaped glasses to wear as well. We got the special popcorn box they had just for the movie and sat down to see what would happen. How would it go?
We purposely went to an early showing — noon to be exact — since I thought we would be more likely to encounter a kid-friendly crowd. The kids knew nothing about a theater. They were intrigued.
“That screen is gonna have the movie? Up there?” I nodded.
And have that movie it did. I was prepared though, bringing earplugs to avoid them being overwhelmed by the sound. thankfully, they were fine. Before the movie, they exchanged bracelets with a little girl beside us who was there with her parents. She was probably 8 or 9 years old and rattled off knowingly about the show and what she had heard. Both Q and L had no clue what she was talking about and just solemnly nodded, not saying much of anything.
From the moment she came on the screen, they were mesmerized. She was so large, it was like she was there in real life for them. L was wearing her unicorn Halloween costume which lit up, so I let her run down in the front of the theater, around to the side and looping back around. It was like her own personal dance party, occasionally with her brother joining in.
I was candidly a little worried about the Folklore and Evermore portions. That they’d lose the momentum of the faster eras and we’d be done for. But they hung in there! Our 8 or 9-year-old seat neighbor was out in the hallway for what she described as the “boring songs” and we got our second round of popcorn and went back inside.
They may never forgive me for her not singing Welcome to New York but they sang and danced their way through the front two rows and all 3 hours of the film, with L often reaching her hand out to Taylor on the big screen.
It was rare. I was there. 🫶
