I have a confession: magicians aren’t my thing. To be honest, I always find myself mostly focused on trying to figure out what trickery is going on and on the over the top and mostly lame delivery. When T wanted to check out The Magician at the NoMad as a part of our early anniversary celebration weekend in the city, I decided I’d put my usual reservations on hold to see if Dan White (“The Magician”) lived up to the hype. And boy did he ever and then some.
Planning your visit to The Magician
I don’t want to ruin the show, as I think I was even more impressed going in completely blind. However, there are some things helpful to know in advance. We booked our tickets early as they do sell out. The space is small with tables for two throughout. Audience count isn’t clear on his site but media coverage ballparks it at around 50. Tickets are available via his website around a month in advance so recommend you plan accordingly. We ended up with tickets for the 10pm show, with seating starting at 9:30pm. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to focus so late but let’s say I was so enthralled that the issue was nonexistent.
Who is Dan White?
Aside from being a guest multiple times on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, I didn’t know much about Dan. His appearance is dapper, from a seemingly always fresh haircut to a crisp three-piece suit. But what’s his full story?
In his thirties, he’s already been doing magic for around two decades. Pretty impressive. He got his start in magic in New Jersey working in a local magic store and it’s led him to opportunities ranging from a show on the Travel Channel (“White Magic”) to production work for David Copperfield to consulting on one of Kanye West’s tours to this ongoing show at The NoMad.
What to expect
The show was polished and did not have the gimmicky format most magic tricks follow. Everything hinged on audience participation which helped to underscore the authenticity of what he was doing. Even moreso when my husband became part of the show! The Magician took his ring and let’s just say it ended up back in front of me at my table and I’m not sure quite how. I’m still trying to figure it out and still telling people how great this show is.

I’m glad you ended up enjoying the show! I’m not much into magic either, although, a magician good enough to be on the Tonight show is sure good enough for me. I’ll have to plan on seeing him sometime.

Well I have watched The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon but never Dan, and would love to see more of his magic tricks.

This sounds like it was a fun adventure. I haven’t heard of him before but going to a magic show is something I’ve always wanted to go to.

I have never been to any magician show in my life so this is a good intro on what to expect and how to plan a visit to the magician. I needed to experience at least once. I missed the chance to see David opperfield when I was at Las Vegas.

It sounds like a great show. I do prefer the shows that horn in on audience participation rather than all the hype. I hope you had a really great time.
