We last saw The Magician Dan White at his usual show location, The NoMad Hotel back in May 2018 during our epic weekend in NYC. Not being a big fan of magic I was skeptical, but the show completely floored me. When a virtual option popped up this year (because 2020), I was intrigued. Thankfully Topher remembered that and surprised me with tickets to the January 2 show for Christmas! He didn’t just surprise me with the show, though. He surprised me with a whole night out in NYC from the comfort of our own home – from a nice dinner, to nice wine, to dressing up, the show and even dessert.
We started with an amazing dinner from our local fave in Milburn, NJ, Common Lot. If you’re in the area, they’re a must try and are currently doing carry-out on Fridays and Saturdays. We’ve chosen not to do indoor dining ourselves, but they do offer that as well. Some of our recent faves on their menu include the braised duck leg red curry, chili, scallion, coconut cream, rice, the house made Mediterranean meatballs with hummus and the pork belly bao buns, yum-yum sauce glaze, lettuce and pickle.
Now, for the main event! The week before the show, we received a small box. Inside, there was a small pouch labeled to open one hour before the show and the other labeled to keep closed until the show started. We also had a list of basic household items to gather to help with our part in the show.
The show itself lasted for a bit over an hour. Like the in person version, it was packed with one surprising reveal after another. I assumed he wouldn’t be doing a virtual show if he couldn’t do it at the same level of his in-person one, and that was definitely correct! There was the added fun surprise that JJ Abrams was also in the “audience” for the show. As a total Felicity fanatic, I had a bit of a moment geeking out when he and his family popped up on the screen!
I won’t say too much about the show itself, because the surprise of it all is part of what makes it so amazing. You can see a bit in this recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon to see if it’s up your alley.
We stayed up for a bit after the show, discussing what we’d seen while enjoying the last part of my Christmas present, a 9 jar assortment from Nancy’s Fancy in LA. Nancy’s is run by James Beard Foundation Award winning Nancy Silverton. It was hard to choose just one favorite out of the line-up, with standouts being the Spiced Stumptown Coffee with cracked cocoa nibs, the mixed berry with Greek yogurt and the coconut stracciatella with bittersweet chocolate strands (how, oh how, is this vegan?!). Highly recommend!
Definitely scratched that Manhattan itch – at least for now. My oh my how I miss the city, but staying safe remains top priority.
