For my birthday, T and I decided to head into the city and make a day of it. We anticipated a nice early Fall day but were surprised by a warm Saturday instead. No complaints. We thought a West Village brunch would be the way to start the day. I’d always been curious to try The Little Owl. It only seats 28 people, so in spite of trying multiple times I have never successfully serviced a dinner reservation. I did however manage to get us an early brunch reservation!
The restaurant
Situated at the intersection of Bedford and Grove, this corner is more commonly known by some as the apartment building from Friends. We were seated towards the front, giving us an excellent view of all the tourists and tour groups that passed by during our brief hour visit.
Brunch Beverages
The music in the restaurant was unexpected and energetic. We ordered one of their cocktails to kick off our meal – the watermelon rosé spritzer, which is a refreshing combination of rosé, watermelon, seltzer and mint. We were amused to see the glasses the drink came in and the music that immediately accompanied their arrival – Ginuwine’s “Pony.” Can’t make this stuff up!
The Menu
Their menu, though not massive, had some great options from which to choose. I was tempted by their beignets but ended up choosing their brioche french toast, which was served with a stewed strawberry sauce. From the fluffy bread to the flavorful sauce, it was definitely some of the best french toast I’ve ever had .
T of course went with an egg dish – their poached organic eggs served on fontina biscuits with breakfast patties, greens and hollandaise sauce.
The Verdict?
Service was prompt and attentive and the food excellent. Would love to come back to give dinner a try.
