Recently my friend N was in town, which meant an excuse to head in to Manhattan for a fun brunch at somewhere new! This time, we chose to make it a West Village brunch at The Loyal, a spot that opened around this time last fall. It was perfect timing too as we share a birthday so brunch was like an early birthday celebration for us! They also offer reservations — always a brunch plus.
We started with an order of their monkey bread. It was delicious and perfect for sharing. It came with a cream cheese dipping sauce. I read some reviews online saying that the sauce was too much, but I beg to differ. Light and fluffy and just the right amount sweet, I found the sauce a delicious addition to this start to our brunch.
This was Q’s first Manhattan brunch. Between the great food and bustling restaurant – I was hopeful that we could keep him entertained, but it wasn’t in the cards. He barely made it through our starter and then he and my husband ended up roaming the streets of the city until we finished up the brunch.
I chose a main that I figured we could share but it ended up being mine, all mine. I had their Olive Oil Skillet Cake, which was served with whipped ricotta and fresh berries. The ricotta and berries totally made this dish. I would have loved more of the whipped ricotta than this dainty smear, but that’s just me being greedy. I’m a big fan of the olive oil cake from One Girl Cookies and this dish reminded me of the cake. It was like a much thicker version of any pancake I’ve ever had. Unique and tasty.
My friend went more savory lunch with her main, trying their spicy pork rigatoni. It was topped with a generous portion of fresh ricotta and basil. I’ll have to give it a try next time!
Overall, great meal and a spot I’d recommend if you find yourself in the area.
