cronut (at last)

July 13, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

When I saw the Cronut flavor of the month for June, I decided to finally check this “to do” off my NYC bucket list. Of all the NYC trends, the Cronut is one that seems to have continually eluded me. Being a big fan of trying all things hype to see if they’re justified, I decided this was the month to see for myself. I mean what’s there not to love about blueberry elderflower with lime sugar?

teenage mutant ninja turtles come to the liberty science center

June 24, 2016 by Lara 1 Comment

Last weekend, T and I made our way out to Jersey City for a visit to the Liberty Science Center to check out the new “Secrets of the Sewer” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exhibit. I’ve been joking it was the first of many steps in training as a soon-to-be mom of a little boy.

I’ll admit that living in Manhattan, a trip to anywhere beyond the immediate PATH Station area is typically something I don’t do. I was surprised how easy it really is to get out there. We took an Uber from Grove Street, but we found out you can actually take the PATH to Pavonia/Newport or Exchange Place and transfer to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to go directly there. Good to know for future visits. [Read more…]

no pasta ’til brooklyn

June 18, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

A few weekends ago, my parents picked us up in Long Island. Some friends of ours were so kind as to give us two bags of baby boy clothing, so we made a quick road trip out last Saturday. We were thinking about grabbing a bite somewhere out on Long Island, but when my parents mentioned Frankie’s 457, it was no question.

soup dumplings in chinatown

June 11, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

There are very few times I’ve intentionally headed down to Chinatown for a meal, but the majority of those times have hands down been to go to Shanghai Cafe Deluxe. Sometimes I feel like I’ve cheated. I came here on a recommendation from friends years ago and have admittedly never embraced exploring other places. Why risk trying a new place when you know one that’s so good and reasonably priced? [Read more…]

weekend at the delaware coast

May 29, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

A quick trip out of New York City that doesn’t involve long times on a bus or train feels like a real treat. Instead, you find yourself situated in someone’s personal car, bound for somewhere new or exciting. We were lucky enough to be doing just that over this Memorial Day weekend.

We woke up earlier than we cared to think about on Saturday to have plenty of time to take Dixie over to board for the night. She was so tired by the time we made it there that she didn’t even have the energy to fully freak out on us. We were already off to a great start! [Read more…]

the quick scoop: hello summer!

May 27, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

Even though this weather has a smile on my face, I can’t stop thinking about how it’s going to be our last summer in the city. I’m already starting to get a bit sentimental about all of those “lasts” – last time to take advantage of easy access to all the city has to offer while the temperatures are over 75. It always seems like there will be plenty of chances to do everything and without fail, it manages to fly by every year. I’ve been reading through all the emails I’ve received and been perusing websites to see what to add to this year’s “must do” list. I’ve found a number of things to consider more immediately for Memorial Day weekend as well as some for summer in general.

breakfast at dirty french

May 22, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

I’ve been wanting to make a trip to Dirty French for some time, so when my good friend Dr. P came in town, I thought it was finally time to check that one off of the list. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been up early enough to plan for breakfast on a weekend, so this was a nice treat.

Several friends told me that the food for brunch/breakfast would be just as good as dinner, without all of the drama of trying to get a reasonable dinnertime reservation and the evening crowds. Going to the Lower East Side pre-brunch crowd was definitely a different feel than I’m used to. Most of the streets were very quiet, with only an occasional family with a stroller going by. pizza at pastoral

May 21, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

Wednesday I left for a quick work trip to Boston. I found myself with just enough time to quickly catch up with a good friend over, what else, pizza. I promise the food here hasn’t all of the sudden become pizza only, but let’s just say it’s been a consistent craving of mine since February.

The staff at Pastoral was very nice and polite as I mentioned my 7PM reservations, to which they relied they do not take reservations via OpenTable. After checking my account, it turned out that OpenTable had expanded well beyond my Boston search criteria and had allowed me to book a table for Bar Pastoral in Chicago, a table I immediately cancelled. Ooooops. [Read more…]

new york baby show

May 14, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

I’m just home from a packed day of perusing and seminars at the New York Baby Show. We were there for the 10:30 session on car seat safety with the team from Britax and have been making our way around the Pier 92 event space ever since.

I was going to share my top three finds from the event, but I ended up instead with a top four. These are my favorite “new to me” vendors from the event that we’re looking forward to looking into more closely or working with in the future as we explore options for Baby Z! [Read more…]

big city moms – prepping for the arrival

May 13, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

I was able to attend a couple of the sessions during Tuesday night’s Big City Moms event. The first was titled “Preparing For Your Arrival Part 1—Sleep Tips, Nursery Safety, Newborn Skincare” and featured panelists Kira Ryan (Founder, Dream Team Baby), Dr. Deena Blanchard (Pediatrician, Premier Pediatrics), and Dr. Amy Kim (Founder, Baby Pibu). The panel provided a great overview of some of the basics. [Read more…]
