getting real with resolutions

January 1, 2016 by Lara Leave a Comment

Oh hello, 2016. So nice to see you. Now that we’ve made it through last night’s celebrations and made our way out of bed, it’s time to do this thing.

A new year means new resolutions – a list we aspire to and often fall short of but that’s ok. As has been my goal as of late, I’m keeping my lists shorter and aiming to stick to them. Let’s see how this goes. It’s less resolutions and more overarching goals. [Read more…]

2015, it’s a wrap

December 31, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

I can’t believe we’re already back here, about to close out another year. Most years seem to fly by, and this year seemed to do so even more than the others. As always, I love a reason to pause and look back through the best the year had to offer. Out of all the recent years, I have to say 2015 is one of the best, as it was filled with so many wonderful milestones and moments I’ll never forget. From engagement to new apartment to getting married to my best friend, it’s hard to not feel a bit sentimental in these final hours. [Read more…]

lemon ricotta cookies

December 24, 2015 by Lara 1 Comment

This morning, we started our annual Christmas Day prep. This year, our crew has grown even more. Tomorrow, we will have my in-laws, my sister’s in-laws, and even my husband’s grandmother all together for our Christmas Day meal. That meant an extra reason for even more sweet treats this Christmas!

To help with the wait for the big meal, we always take time to make some snacks to enjoy beginning Christmas Eve. I always enjoy cooking out at my parent’s house because compared to our little NYC apartment, their kitchen feels massive. Rather than making sugar cookies this year, I decided to try this lemon ricotta cookie recipe from Giada de Laurentiis. A coworker of mine made these for our team this year, and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since.

the quick scoop: tick tock, tick tock

December 18, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

Seven days to go, and we’re getting closer by the second — but who’s counting? Between some big work projects and the insanity that was trying to get Adele tickets yesterday (side of the stage view, can’t be too mad at you), I’m ready for some holiday downtime and quality time on the couch.

ADELE

That does mean though that shopping options are limited if you perhaps have some gifts left to buy. If you’re looking for some local options for this weekend, check out the second annual Crown Heights Holiday Stroll happening from 1-6PM on Saturday. It’s also a great time to head over to any of the other NYC holiday markets – Union Square, Bryant Park, and Columbus Circle. If you haven’t been yet, the Winter Flea + Smorgasburg is open this weekend (and every weekend) and should have some great gift options. You can also head over to Target’s Wonderland at 70 Tenth Avenue (only open through Tuesday). [Read more…]

all out date night in midtown manhattan

December 17, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

We often treat double date night with friends as an excuse to hit up not one but two places. Manhattan has so many great spots that you’re never at a loss for a second stop!

To start, we made our way to Raines Law Room at The William. This location has a different vibe from the original location in the Flatiron District; that one a true speakeasy, whereas this one has more of an upscale hotel cocktail bar vibe. They each accept reservations – (Sunday through Tuesday in the Flatiron, Monday through Saturday in Midtown). Both also have the same great menu, featuring a number of familiar dishes, some Raines standards, and several seasonal offerings. There are also a limited number of nibbles and desserts. If you’re there, I recommend their ricotta and toast. Delicious. [Read more…]

union square cafe says farewell to 21 east 16th street

December 11, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

Weeks ago when I learned that Union Square Cafe would be relocating from the space it’s held since 1985, I decided we had to make a visit to the original space. Many have noted the ironic fact that the restaurant is being priced out of their original space when they helped to put the neighborhood on the map. As this article states, it’s ironic that a restaurant that has been there since before the area was trendy is now being priced of an area it helped to build.

Danny Meyer’s first restaurant (which he opened at the age of only 27) has received much praise over the years, including multiple nods from the prestigious James Beard Foundation. In honor of the final weeks at their original location, they did a special two-week, three-course prix fixe offering of all of the favorites from their 30-year run, which ended this past Sunday, December 6th. Guests could do a special pairing for an additional charge (we did not indulge). For this special event, they coordinated pours from a very elite subset of their wines, with vintages dating back to 1978, for a $65 supplement. You could also order by the glass from that special wine list from $27-$48.

homemade lemon ginger preserves

December 9, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

Going into the wedding planning process, we knew the last thing we wanted to do was to give our guests a generic favor. After the time we put into finding the perfect venue and decorating it in just the right way to pair with our relationship, we didn’t want this to be a throwaway element to the day’s planning.

With our ceremony and reception scheduled for a Brooklyn brownstone, we decided there wasn’t anything more fitting than something homemade. Ever since taking a class on homemade jam making with Nancy of Potlicker Kitchen, I’d been fascinated with the idea of making something unique of my own, and this was a perfect opportunity. I chose lemon ginger preserves as a nod to our wedding colors (royal blue and yellow) and our wedding cake (raspberry lemonade). When I found this recipe online, I knew this was the one I had to make for the occasion. [Read more…]

the quick scoop: deck that faux tree

December 4, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

Happy Friday! I’d originally taken off today thinking it would be for final holiday shopping but I just clicked “purchase” on my last item on the list. Whew! That leaves the day ahead free for an early afternoon movie, decking our new mini-tree, and a fancy dinner tonight (more to come on that later).

Save the weather, the holidays really are my favorite time to be in New York City. Everything is decorated, from tourist sites down to office buildings. Love it. The city is so beautiful all shiny and colorful. [Read more…]

a return to sleep no more

November 18, 2015 by Lara Leave a Comment

Still it cried ‘Sleep no more!’ to all the house: ‘Glamis hath murder’d sleep, and therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more,—Macbeth shall sleep no more!

I’ll state the obvious and say that New York City is pricey. That means I’ll typically do an expensive thing once, and then move on to the next thing on the to-do list. It’s a nice methodical way to continually choose to experience more of what the city has to offer. Sleep No More though is one of my exceptions. Trust me – after you go, you’re spoiled for immersive theater thereafter.
